The Animal Epidemic Control Act requires pets living in Estonia to be vaccinated against rabies. The Estonian Society of Small Animal Veterinarians recommends vaccinating dogs and cats, in addition to the minimum required by law, against other common diseases. Most vaccines can be obtained in the form of a complex vaccine, i.e. with a single injection, the animal gains immunity against several diseases.

You need to know that it is also recommended to vaccinate animals when they are kept in room conditions, since people inevitably bring pathogens with them from the street or from the entrance. If the owner of the dog wants to participate in exhibitions or other events of the Estonian Kennelliit Association (Eesti Kennelliit), then the rules for ESS vaccination apply (in addition to rabies vaccination, vaccination against other diseases is mandatory). Vaccination rules for hunting dogs are given in the Hunting Act.

Pet data and registration (Lemmikloomaregister, LLR)

In addition to the general laws, every pet owner must follow the current rules for keeping cats and dogs established by the local government. These rules may differ slightly from one local government to another. Every local government has to clean up excrement after pets; moreover, most local governments also require the registration and chipping of dogs and cats (you can get the exact information on the home page of the local government). Local governments are also involved in the capture and maintenance of stray animals. If a pet dies, then information about its burial, cremation or removal of the corpse can be obtained from the local government.

So that the lost animal can quickly get to the owner or, if necessary, the owner of the animal can be identified, pets are microchipped. Installing the microchip alone is not enough, the pet's microchip number must be recorded in the pet register, where this number is linked to information about the owner. At the moment, it is advisable to enter a pet in several registers, since the compulsory registers are with local governments, and the escaped animal may find itself in another city or parish in a short time. Pedigree dogs are also registered in the register of the Estonian Kennel Association.

According to the ordinance of the local governments that have joined the register for keeping dogs and cats, the owner of the pet is obliged to register the pet in the pet register (Lemmikloomaregister, LLR) of the local government .

The owner of a pet registered in the register can familiarize himself with the information about his pet entered in the pet register (Lemmikloomaregister, LLR), and, if necessary, correct his contact information: phone, e-mail. mail. The owner's residence address is taken from the population register.

The owner of the animal can also inform the register of the death of his animal and the cause of death, if this has not been done by the veterinarian.

Chipping and registering other pets is generally advisory in nature. Contact your local government for information on chipping and registering animals.
